Liberty is essential, but sometimes you need to step outside your comfort zone to earn it. “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ~ Benjamin Franklin, 1759. Benjamin said that quote during the Revolutionary War, while America was fighting for it’s rights against the British. That is only one of his inspiring quotes that helped unite American Soldiers and inspire colonists. Benjamin said this quote to women. That way, the women can persuade their husbands.
Who is this quote talking to? Why did he say temporary safety? It won’t last? There are lots of questions we can think of from this quote. But the main idea is that liberty has a price. You have to earn it. America earned it’s freedom by winning the Revolutionary War. That was a HUGE price because we lost thousands of soldiers who were fighting. Wars aren’t safe, but they fought anyway.

Benjamin Franklin said in 1759 “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” My only question is why would someone do that come on are ancestors taught us freedom is never free even thought it is in the word freedom. As a famous quote goes said by John's Church, March 23, 1775 “Give me liberty or give me death.” Bigs clam and it’s good that he kept his word. Thanks to John's Church who got us liberty and no one would have freedom with out sacrifice. We have liberty and freedom thanks to sacrifice of millions.

Liberty cannot be bough! Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty. Which means “individual freedom.”(pg. 3) Individual freedom comes with a cost. “People that give freedom up for temporary freedom” who would give up freedom and right for temporary safety. For an example when you have the freedom to listen to music a lot, or would you give that up for temporary band that plays for only a few nights. What would you lose more out of?
When you say someone doesn’t deserve something is it always true? “When you give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Wouldn’t you need to have choices in your life? What about the feeling that your safe were you live? Well I would like to have choices, right? Well let me put it this way, would you like to look identical to the person next to you or your nabber. I did not think so every one wants to be different thats what makes our world so diverse. I do agree with Ben Franklin to some degree. Other parts of this saying not so much.

  3. Liberty is necessary for life

The purpose of the statement by Benjamin Franklin was to draw attention to the people of America that freedom has to be earned and it should not be given away for the sake of peace. At this time in America’s history the country was ruled by England and was taxed by England. Their was no representation in England by Americans in making laws and applying taxes. They weren’t really free. Because they had no say in the laws and the taxes.
The goal was to reinforce the idea that you have to earn real freedom. In this case America had to fight England to free it’s country so they could have their own rights. The war was called the Revolutionary War. The sacrifice by these Americans gave us the freedom that we now have. These Americans gave up the safety of living under English rule to fight and sacrifice for freedom.

Would you give up today for tomorrow? If you had the choice of now or forever what would you choose? In Ben Franklin’s quote referring to freedom and liberty asked very much the same thing. Being safe is a essential thing, I agree with that statement, but to give up your liberty for temporary safety is ridiculous. Now saying that, I could understand the fear of the Americans, pre Revolutionary War. Also I could see the fact that Ben could be killed for being so outspoken. All in all this little quote could and may have shaped what our country is now.

Liberty is necessary for life. “They that can’t give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Ben Franklin 1759. This was quoted wrongly as They can give up essential liberty to obtain a little liberty temporary safety. This was used by Ben Franklin during the Revolutionary War. Ben Franklin was best known as a statesman and author. I think what Ben Franklin was trying to say you need to earn freedom.

Ben Franklin was one of the many delegates whose jobs was to think of ideas that should be implemented into the Constitution. His most important contribution was the Great Compromise. One of the major sticking points was the question of whether congressional representation would be based on population or would be equal for all states. Ben Franklin was a good author and salesman that helped think of ideas for the constitution.

Freedom is not free. You can’t just get it when you want it. People in the U.S, had to fight for freedom. Wars have been going on for a very long time. The first terrible war was the Revolutionary war, which happened while Ben Franklin was alive.
Ben Franklin was sent to school for only one year because his family didn’t have a lot of money. Ben wrote a quote that said, “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you’re dead and rotten, either write things worth reading or or do things worth the writing.” I think that that quote is very insperational because he is famous for the things he did, and nobody forgot him when he was “dead and rotten”. He made a difference to our lives and people never forgot him.

Liberty cannot be bought! Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve great liberty. Which means individual freedom. “Liberty freedom” (P3) comes at a cost. There will be a consequence if you give up your liberty of freedom for safety.
People “give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety of freedom.” (P1) That means people give up there freedom and liberty to get a little safety. Liberty cannot be purchased. It is something you have to earn. Once you earn it you must not take it for granted.

Liberty is essential in life. that it is a good thing in life because you can be free. not have a society where the government tells you everything that your supposed to do and think and wear. So liberty is essential in life because then you can be free. I would want liberty because I would want to be free, and not be governed by the government.
I get what Ben Franklin is trying to say. He is trying say that if you can give up liberty and buy temporary safety, does not deserve to have liberty. And does not deserve the safety because he/she gave up there liberty to have protection. So he/she does not deserve safety. So I agree with Ben Franklin on what he is saying.

Liberty can not be bought! This can also be explained by this quote "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." this was said by Ben Franklin in 1759. Ben franklin was a scientist and a citizen “He dedicated himself to the improvement of everyday life” said Inventors.about.com. I believe Franklin would say this because peoples rights should not be taken for granted and they are crazy if they would ever give it up. They especially should not give something up that would be forever for something that is only temporary
I agree with what Ben franklin said because people should realize that a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty. Which means “Individual freedom”. (pg.3) Instead of trying to trade your liberty for temporary safety you should be earning safety forever. For example if your teacher told you that you can have a ten minute break form doing your work, but if you do that will have extra homework. Or would you rather keeping doing your work and not have any homework at the end of the day. That Is why I think Ben Franklin said "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." and why I agree with what he said.

    Essential Liberty

Liberty is essential for life. Ben Franklin's quote still going strong today. What is Liberty? Liberty is the right and power to act and believe what you want. Ben Franklin's quote was in a letter from the Pennsylvania Assembly. Ben Franklin is a big part of U.S history, not only for being our president but for being a strong American.
Ben Franklin's words still stand strong especially post 9/11. We have been a strong a united country. Essential and little make the biggest difference. Little difference big change. Being free and having privileges. Ben Franklin's quote has made a big impact on our lives today.

Liberty cannot be bought! Often the more difficult of a path you take will lead you to achieve greater liberty. This means that “Individual Freedom” (Pg.3) comes at a cost. This quote from Ben Franklin (1759) can have a lot of meanings. One of those meanings is that, “People can sacrifice their freedom – or their way out for nothing.”(pg.1) Some people who did this would end up giving there essential liberty to have a little sense of security. Ben Franklin would say they deserve neither liberty nor justice.

A lot of people feel that everybody deserves to have freedom however Ben Franklin thinks that people don't deserve safety nor liberty when it is trying to be bought. I don't necessarily agree with this statement because I think that each person should be able to feel safe at night or even going to work feeling safe. I also feel that they should have some liberty and feel included in our country. “The people who give up individual freedom for safety and rights should not get them” (Pg.2) many people think that this is true, but is it? That is the real question we need to think about. I have and this is what I got out of it the quote. I hope you have learned something about the quote made by Ben Franklin in 1759.

People get many meanings and messages through this quote. Freedom is more essential than safety. Freedom is never FREE. What if you were to give up your liberty for safety? You might not be getting the safety you pay for. If you were to be deceived, you’re left with nothing, no liberty nor safety.

Though it’s not so safe to be free, liberty is always worth more. Think about it, paying for a temporary safety with your liberty. Notice the word “temporary” in front of safety. Once the safety is gone or runs out, what are you left with? You’re left with neither safety nor liberty.

Liberty cannot be bought. Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty. Which means “individual freedom”, (pg 3). Individual freedom comes at a cost. Sacrifices have to be made. In order to keep liberty you may be risking a lot, but its all worth it. If you give up individual freedom only to keep yourself safe you don’t deserve it. You don’t deserve any of it.
Liberty is essential. It is extremely important to life. Freedom and rights for everyone means more than a little protection for yourself. Freedom has to be earned not just given. An example is the revolutionary war. They fought for their freedom risking their lives. The people that will not fight for their liberty and watch while others do should not be rewarded with it.

    Essential Liberty

Liberty has a price. Like everything else in this world nothing is free. You have to work hard to get payed, do homework, or even buy groceries. Ben Franklin, an American from the 1700’s new this to be true. He was very famous in his time for a number of things. He was born in Boston Massachusetts, January 17th 1706. In his younger years he worked for his brother at a printing press he owned. When he was a bit younger he ran away to New York by boat to look for a new job.
When Ben Franklin grew up he founded the Pensilvania Gazette. After that he went on to found the Poor Richards Almanack. He also gave speeches all around America persuading people to become patriots. He gave many speeches but he preferred to talk to women because then they would talk their husbands and persuade them. Ben Franklin also made a huge discovery. He discovered electricity. He went out in the rain and tied a key to a kite and when a bolt of lighting hit the key, it traveled down the string and he felt the shock.
Over all Ben Franklin’s life was full of struggles to over come and he didn’t back down because something was to hard or he was to lazy. He was a huge part of American culture back then and today.

Liberty can not be bought! Sometimes a more different path will achieve greater liberty. Which means "individual freedom" (pg.3) individual freedom has a cost and so does liberty. I don't know who would give up liberty for temporary safety. I would never ever give up liberty just to have temporary safety. For example if you could play multiple sports forever and you give that up just to quit after a couple days and do something else. Still using this example if you went back to playing multiple sports then what he is saying is that they might not let you rejoin the sports teams because you quit on them.

Liberty is necessary for life! “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety...” is a misquoted version of “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” I think the real quote sounds better, because it states how if they try to get safety, then they will fail both liberty and safety. “This sentence was much used in the Revolutionary time period.” That is from a website called www.bartleby.com. I think that this would be true, because it sounds like an inspiration speech you could give to your soldiers.
“Benjamin Franklin was the most famous American in his day.” This is from a website called www.ushistory.com. I agree with that, because Benjamin Franklin was famous in the past, and he is still famous today, so he must of been very famous in his time. “Wherever he went, crowds formed.” That is from the same website as the other quote just stated. I agree with this quote, because like I said before, he was very famous in his time. For example, Justin Bieber is very famous now, and people make crowds around him, and thats what people did in 1759.

People in America under estimate how much freedom we have. When Ben wrote that quote, it was when he was fighting to earn our freedom. In the quote, I think that it means that liberty has a price to. If your going to give up all of your freedom and a little bit of money for safety, then you don’t deserve either of them. Mainly because freedom has a price to.
If you if you go back to when Ben wrote this quote (1759). He had to fight for the freedom that we are using. People lost there lives for this freedom. Now are you still going to want to trade it all for a little safety? If that answer was yes, then you truly don’t deserve either freedom or safety.

Why would any one wont to give up freedom and right for temporary safety. For example when you have to freedom to play any sport of your choice, or would you give up your sport for a temporary T.V show that’s only on for three days. What would you miss out on more?

I think that he was trying to tell us the people that give up there liberty to stay safe should not even have had it in the first place. If they are willing to give up there rights they should have not even had them at all. I do agree with this statement a lot. I think that they should never give up any liberty that you have. I think that if you are lacking the liberty that everyone should have that you should try to do something about it too. I mean don't just sit there and take it you need to fight for what you want and need.
In my opinion There is no point to giving up liberty for safety that only lasts for a short time. I mean like would you like to do something that is permanent for something that last for a short time. I know I would hate to do that especially for something like liberty. Taking away liberty is basically taking away your rights. You might as well just put strings on you and call you a puppet.

Liberty can not be bought. Those who are willing to exchange freedom for an easy way out do not deserve either. The quote “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little safety, do not deserve neither liberty or safety.” That was said by Benjamin Franklin was used in as a point at the Governor of Pennsylvania. It was used against him because the colonies were sacrificing their liberty for protection from England against the French. Franklin said that the Americans should face their own problems instead of depending on the British and sacrificing their freedom. It was definitely a quote used in revolutionary times.
I agree with this quote because people who sacrifice their freedom for false protection really don’t deserve it. The people who moved to the colonies moved there for liberty from England, yet they exchanged their purpose just for protection. I think Franklin felt the same way about this predicament because of the way it was used. There is really no point in leaving for freedom if you’re just going to give it up for a little bit of protection. And there really isn’t much protection England can offer because half of the United States agreed with Benjamin Franklin. That is the purpose of this quote.

Ben Franklin was born on January 17th, 1706. He made this quote when he was 53 years old. Ben Franklin was the tenth born in his family that totaled with 17 kids. When Ben was 15 his brother started 'The New England Courant' the first newspaper in Boston. Franklin's printing business was thriving in the 1730s and 1740s. He also started setting up franchise printing partnerships in other cities. By 1749 he retired from business and started concentrating on science, experiments, and inventions. Among Franklin's inventions are swim fins, the glass armonica (a musical instrument), bifocals, and as we all know the kite. Ben Franklin later died on April 17, 1790 at the age of 84, 20,000 people attended the funeral.

“They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Ben Franklin, 1759

I have wondered in my past to the way I never understood about my liberties but when in class we went threw this quote I just understood as if a light had flicked on as if my bell finally rang. True fully Ben was a genius with words, and he knew what people wanted with moving here. He knew that freedom is never free; yes I know crazy free may be in freedom but it’s not free. Freedom will be free the day we die; only because freedom is fought it started the day pilgrims came over here, and Ben knew that. Ben Franklin knew that people had to fight. People had to go against the British king to have there liberty, because if you could give up, you didn’t want it so you would have had better luck in the “safe” land.
I agree with that saying why do something that not only would you not get anything out of it you would not get anything with it let alone want it. IF YOU REALLY WANT SOMETHING FIGHT FOR IT!!!!

What Ben Franklin meant by this quote was to alert America that freedom has to be earned. It should not be given away for free. The reason he said that was because he believed that people should earn freedom and safety by hard work. America was being ruled by England. At this time in life america wanted nothing to to do with England. They still had no rights in self government, because England wouldn’t let them be free.

The goal was to be free and independent. Therefore America had to fight England for freedom. If they won this war they could have their own rights. The war was named the Revolutionary War. The risk of this war was to free america and to make it what it is today. Americans gave up the lives of thousands for freedom for their country and safety of their own government and their own law enforcers.

Liberty is essential for life. That’s roughly what Ben Franklin was trying to say when he said, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety,” said in 1759. There are a lot of different opinions pertaining to this specific quote. A lot people say that this quote has been misinterpreted. And that’s probably true, seeing as there are a lot of different opinions and interpretations. I highly doubt that anyone actually knows what Benjamin Franklin was trying to say.
As I was researching this subject, I came across an interesting phrase; “What is the opposite of liberty? The answer is: slavery.” I found this on www.kevincraig.us. What interests me is yes, the opposite of liberty is, I believe, slavery, however in the context in which he was using this phrase didn’t make sense. Now, I don’t believe he was incorrect, just that he was talking about America; America is all about freedom and whatnot. It occurred to me when that phrase popped up that the colonists had slaves! If America was really all about freedom, why did the colonists have slaves? I know that the African Americans weren’t thought of as really humans at the time, but they still should’ve gotten some liberties too.
Another interesting phrase I came across while researching this subject was “America’s Founding Fathers would say that Americans today are slaves. Wealthy slaves, but still slaves.” I found this phrase also at www.kevincraig.us . This triggered another thought; he’s right. Not exactly to that extreme, I don’t think, but he is right. American government does sort of control our lives. America isn’t really a completely free country. We have laws. We have government. However sensible the laws we have now are, they are still laws that every American citizen has to abide by. Liberty is essential for life. That is a very important lesson that we all have to learn sometime.

Some people risk their lives to get freedom for themselves and others. There are several types of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, political freedom, economic freedom, and physical are all types of freedom.

When this quote was spoken by Ben Franklin it was colonial times. At this time the colonies were under European tyranny. When he said this he was talking to people of the world. Liberty can not be bought you will get nothing for nothing, Freedom like liberty is not free. A different path will achieve grater liberty. How do you get liberty? It is not bought it is fought for. You can fight for it politicly or you can fight for it through war. If you buy liberty it will not last forever. Essential liberty and liberty are two completely different things, one is needed the other is a wanted.

The quote symbols are there because it was republished in 1818. They who can give up Essential liberty to obtain temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. That is what his original thoughts were. His quote was on the cover of a historical review on the Constitution and government of Pennsylvania. It was part of his notes at the Pennsylvania assembly. Don't steal freedom, freedom is already free! This is almost or what Benjamin Franklin was trying to say when he said, "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin, 1759. This was my example of what freedom and safety men't to me! A fact that I fond to be pretty darn interesting is that "This statement was used as a motto on the title page of An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania."http://www.billionquotes.com/index.php/Benjamin_Franklin. Another fact that I found interesting is that “The phrase itself was first used in a letter from that Assembly dated November 11,1755 to the Governor of Pennsylvania.” http://www.billionquotes.com/index.php/Benjamin_Franklin.
When I read that phrase I finally thought to myself. I don’t even know Benjamin Franklin! Also, how does he get to send all of these letters to these governments (or phrases). My second fact that I thought was pretty interesting is that “Many variants derived from this phrase have arisen and have usually been incorrectly attributed to Franklin.” "http://www.billionquotes.com/index.php/Benjamin_Franklin. Isn’t this illegal? Isn’t this plagiarism? I would like to learn these two things. Who is Benjamin Franklin and what are the rules of plagiarism?

Freedom is never free. This saying goes hand in hand with a famous quote said by Ben Franklin. “ They that can give up, essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, Deserve neither liberty nor safety. “ Ben Franklin, 1779. To me this saying means those that are willing to go out of their way to harm others do not deserve liberty. If someone can afford to give up their own liberty for a little bit of safety then they do not deserve the rights others have.

This quote coincidentally was said the year the Declaration of Independence was made by the one who said that quote. Ben Franklin also created the Declaration of Independence. After he also had many famous quotes and was a renowned philosopher. Franklin also did many great things in his life time. It is said that he was the first to discover electricity. He did this by sending a key hooked up to a kite into a stormy sky. Then lightning struck the kite and hit the key then shocked franklin. Ben Franklin is one of the most famous people in american history.

Can you give up essential liberty? There is a saying “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Ben Franklin 1759. I think what this means is that Ben Franklin was thinking it is easy to give up essential liberty, but if you do give it up you don’t deserve liberty or safety. So why don’t your deserve both liberty and safety? If you give up one for the other you can’t have both because you just proved that you would pick one over the other. So that means if you picked safety over liberty and then you wanted both after you don’t deserve liberty because you picked over it.

There are people who say that they do not understand what Ben Franklin is saying. So some people will not understand. The ones who will probably understand better are the ones who have lived up to Ben Franklin’s quote. And if you have lived up to it you have just admitted that you would choose either safety or liberty. If you asked me I agree with Ben Franklin I would never choose one over the other.

Freedom is not free. You can’t just get it when you want it. People in the U.S, had to fight for freedom. Wars have been going on for a long time. The first bad war was the Revolutionary war, and that happened while Ben Franklin was alive.
Ben Franklin was sent to school for only one year because his family didn’t have a lot of money. Ben wrote a quote that said, “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you’re dead and rotten, either write things worth reading or do things worth the writing.” He made a difference to our lives and people never forgot him.

Liberty is essential to life. Liberty means kind’ve like having rights. In 1755 Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to the governor of Pennsylvania. In that letter contains this quote.
"They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
To some people it means they are willing to give up their rights to increase and insure there safety for a measure amount of time. To other people it means think that benjamin franklin wasn’t describing the individual power. But he was describing the self government as the “liberty would be contemptible to trade". To the another group of people it means government power and the problems they face with rights. This is how the quote was used and what it means to people.

Liberty is necessary for life.

For freedom is never free you always have to fight for it. During 1759 the Battle of Ticonderoga was occurring also known as the French and Indian War. Which occurred for seven years. The French and the British troops were fighting over territory. The French already had Canada and Britain had the New England colonies, but they both wanted more land and more control. The New England colonies were sending men to fight against both the French and British troops.

I believe that this quote was used to tell people are you willing to fight for this country? This freedom that we so graciously got and be very patriotic. I think Benjamin Franklin who was a politician was trying to remind people why they came to America and if your not willing to stand with this country, then you should just go back to Britain. Yes you can get protection from Britain, but you will not be free. You may have came to this country for religious rights and democratic reasons, but in order to keep them. You must continue to fight for them. So, freedom is never free.

First of all, the quote, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety” is a very important quote because safety is really important, safety is important now than in the 1700s, and safety is more important now than in the 1600s. Back then, they didn’t have safety. Safety is one of the most important things in order to play football or any sport. You can use safety in so many ways in your life.
Secondly, you can use safety for Soccer, Baseball, Football, and especially Dodgeball. If you get hurt, that could effect you for the rest of your life! Make sure that if you play football, don’t tackle too hard, don’t hurt the teammates so bad, and don’t leave any of your safety gear. If you leave your safety gear, then you may not get to play for the rest of the season. Only if you or a teammate gets hurt, tell your coach, teacher, or if it’s really bad, call 911.

Freedom is not free! There is no such thing as free freedom. “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, Deserves neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin 1759. These famous words were by Benjamin Franklin. He said them at the time when they were fighting for freedom against the British. He’s saying that because they wouldn't lose people lives for no freedom, but if they were willing to do that, they should deserve neither.
You lose rights so that your country may be free. Such as back then, they lost many lives. We still lose lives today for freedom, but there’s more lost than just lives. You also must lose certain rights, but the rights that are lost benefit every one in the country. Although there were many lost, we gained more because they were gone.

The Meaning of Benjamin franklins speech in 1759 was that people willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither Freedom or security. The reason he said this is because he wanted everyone to earn real freedom

The path to go isn't the path to follow. This is the lesson learned from Ben Franklin Quote. This means that if you give up freedom for a little temporary protection then you shouldn't deserve freedom nor protection.
This quote was usually used to get people to help in the revolutionary war. And for those who gave up freedom and help the British, then they wouldn't deserve the American freedom.

To get liberty you have to fight. America got there liberty through the civil war.

This phrase is one of few reason he is on the 100 dollar bill. This phrase was said during the british war. Temporary is not forever so use it while you have it. It might be a more difficult choice but it is the right one. So dont sell your liberty.

Liberty is essential,“They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Benjamin said that quote during the Revolutionary War, while America was fighting for it’s rights against the British. That is one of his inspiring quotes that helped unite American Soldiers and inspire colonists.
But why did he say this? who is this quote talking to? Why did he say temporary safety? It won’t last? There are lots of questions we can think of from this quote. But the idea Benjamin Franklin was trying to distribute is that liberty has a price. You have to earn it. America earned it’s freedom by winning the Revolutionary War. That is why we have our freedom today.

I book was written about the quote "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin,1759 Ben Franklin was a simple printer and writer and was the first president of Pennsylvania society for promoting the abolition of slavery.
He was part of the continental congress. Also he signed the deceleration of independence and he was consulted by Thomas Paine for advice. He was a very good writer and wrote 198 letters from 16 places most letters from Ben Franklin were written in 1772.

Liberty cannot be bought. Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty. Which means “individual freedom.”(pg. 3) Individual freedom comes with a cost. To have Individual freedom you might have to leave your comfort zone and maybe explore what it feels like to be free but it might come with a price. I was interested in this because what price would you have to pay. Maybe you would give up your liberty or money or family. I thought about it and its up to you what you give up and what you lose.
We should be happy that we have freedom. How did we get freedom? We got freedom from the men and women that fought for us. People have been fighting for us for many years and we should show respect because those are the people that gave us freedom. So next time you think about remember the people that died for your freedom and honor them because they are brave.

Don't look at something short term, look at it long term. That is what this quote reminds me of “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Ben Franklin 1759. Like if you make a mistake once you know that you can change it. Don’t look at something short term because there might be more coming your way. “This phrase was also the motto in historical review of Pennsylvania, attributed to Franklin.” “This quote itself was used in a letter from this assembly dated November 11, 1755 to the Governor of Pennsylvania.” “Eat to live, and not live to eat.” This quote is also from Ben Franklin. You can eat so you can live and if you don’t get then you can’t live.

What this quote means to me is that we don’t have total freedom we only have some, because we have the law that we have to follow by. What is also means to me is that don’t look for something up close look from it from a far. What do you think this means?

Liberty cannot be bought. Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty which means “individual freedom.” (pg 3). Individual freedom comes at a cost. Suppose there was a war going on and it depended on you to take charge. You are helping other people but also taking your life for it.

The purpose of the quote was to explain to people in America that freedom isn’t given, we have to work hard for it. It should not just be given. The country at once was ruled and taxed by England. Therefore, America wasn’t really free because they had no say in what they had to do. So then it comes in again about earning real freedom. America then went to war with England to free the country to have our own rights. This is now called the Revolutionary War. The only reason why we have freedom now is from the American’s that sacrificed their lives for freedom for the country.

He said this because at this time the British were trying to rule us. They were taxing and making us laws. This ultimately turned into the revolutionary war. This was was what gave us the freedom we have today.

In the letter from the Assembly dated November 11, 1755 to the Governor of Pennsylvania, was this quote. It was used to state the great necessity of liberty.

Liberty, the right or privilege of making something more of your life. Without it, your enslaved and restricted from the free life you could be living. So, why give it up? Paying for safety that’s temporary, or in other words, safety that doesn’t last forever, with your liberty is a regretful choice. Would you rather work hard for a lasting result, or take the easy was and have a temporary result? It may seem like a waste of time as you do it, but in the end everything will end up better than it would if you just slid right through it. For example, you forgot to do your homework, so you copied your friend’s paper and got an A on the assignment. You didn’t learn anything from this, but you still got a good grade for the time being. Then, you take a test on the material you learned. You don’t have your friends paper to look at now, so you failed because you took the easy way around the first time. Now your grade is lower than it most likely would’ve been. Think about it. Would you rather have a good grade because you cheated on your homework, or because you worked hard on your own to get the grade deserved?
“They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” I think the point Ben Franklin was trying to make in saying this is that, if they want lasting rights, they shouldn’t give up for temporary things, they should work hard, and then they will have all the things they wanted and more. He was a Patriot, so it makes sense that he was willing to fight for the rights they deserved. With persistence, and pride I think they were more than capable of achieving the results they desired. I believe that if all people had this same point of view, the whole world would be a much more advanced place. Things that last won’t come free.

Liberty has a price! You can’t get liberty for free, you have to earn it.This Just like the United States does. We fight for our freedom and liberty. “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety” Benjamin Franklin 1759. What this is saying is you have to give a little to earn a little. If you don’t give up any liberty, you won’t get any safety in return. Those who go into the service understand what he’s saying. They gave up some liberty to protect others. He was 53 years-old when he said this. Ben was answering to the Governor at the Assembly of Pennsylvania.

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706. That was 306 years ago. He took over the first newspaper in Boston when his brother was sent to jail for many reasons. His brother would never let him be in the newspaper business when he was around. Benjamin became a father in 1728 when his wife had their first child. In 1759 he was in London, and Williamsburg, VA.

Ben would usually tell things like quotes to women. Women would actually listen, on the other hand men didn’t really care. In Benjamin’s 84 years of life he has accomplished many things. He became especially famous being a scientist, inventor, statesman, printer, a philosopher, a musician and an economist.

Freedom has a price! Freedom is something you must purchase. Not like in a store though. It is something you can buy by working for your country's causes or just being a simple american who doesn't cause any trouble. There is another saying that kind of goes with that. " Give a little take a little." That quote relates to how when you buy freedom you can can also get protection.

Protection is not free either though. We now have freedom in our country by fighting for what we thought was right and we also inspired other countries to do the same.

One thing that Ben Franklin meant when he spoke about this is that there is a price for freedom. A example of this is when our country became a country. It was about 1759, the same time Ben Franklin said this speech. Our group of colonists were mad about the un-fair Taxes that the king was throwing at us, we decided that we wonted freedom. So we started a war with Britain (and the king) so we could have our freedom.

At the end of the war we had ganged our freedom and were our own country. Another thing that I think Ben Franklin was trying to say is that Liberty comes before safety. This means with out liberty we are not safe. Also I think this means that liberty is what our country is all about and the reason that we started it. And that is what I think about Ben Franklins speech.

Freedom can never be free- it always comes with a catch. Benjamin Franklin once said, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”. This statement was written back in 1775, right around the time of the Revolutionary War. It was used on the title page of A Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania, and also at the Pennsylvania Assembly. Used very often throughout history, this is one of the most popular quotes of all time.
Now, to get down to the meaning of it- freedom is never free. Those who are willing to sacrifice their freedom to gain safety from some sort of threat aren’t deserving of those freedoms in the safety they think they are gaining by giving them up. Freedom shouldn’t be given to them. Freedom can be rewarded to the people that follow the laws, that are civil and just- not to a criminal. We have to fight for our freedom. It doesn’t just come to us served on a silver platter. Freedom is, truly and honestly, never free.

So why would you want to give up all you have? Freedom is not free, it is a price you have to pay. So fight for your todays, and be rewarded tomorrow. Temporary safety is not equal to life living in America. I’m glad we fought for or freedom.

Essential liberty is not being a slave to be free. Would you become a slave to gain a short while of safety? If you would give up liberty think about this. Freedom and liberty is never free as well as its virtue. That's what I learned from Benjamin Franklin. “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety - Ben Franklin 1759. That is what Benjamin said in reply to the governor in a Pennsylvania Assembly. Those were the wise but truthful words that he spoke for safety and liberty.

There was a purpose to that quote which was, explaining people work hard for what have now which is freedom. It is not free to have freedom. it was said while the Revolutionary War was going on to get us freedom. So we don’t have to listen to The British and have them push us around. This quote is kind of like “ sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase” which i similar to Benjamin Franklin s quote. Liberty is not free. This quote is about The people giving up there liberty for now, to fight for more freedom later on. And if they don't when we get that better freedom that thy shouldn't be able to have it. I believe that this quote is talking to the loyalists. I think this because the loyalists moved to there colonies but still respect the king. So there for they will not fight for freedom now so when we get it later on when they want it they can't have it.

Those that purchase security with liberty will lose both. Inscribed at the bottom of the statue of liberty is ben franklins famous words" They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin 1759.
Liberty in-of itself is the absence of security, such as not having metal detectors at an airport you are free to take anything on a plane but at a risk. The foundation for liberty is the absence of security the absence of being controlled. Liberty is risky while security is not and if you give up some liberty for a little safety you will lose both.

Ben Franklin once said something and it went something like "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin, 1759. This quote has gone to mean several different things but one thing that comes to mind is what if he was trying to say that Liberty is something that all of us need. But anyone who would give it up for safety is nobody who deserves it. Ben franklin has said many things that all of us can use like “ a penny saved is a penny earned” and their are many other things that can we can learn from him like this quote. There is a quote that benjamin franklin said that seems to connect to this other quote,"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power." This quote may also tie into the other quote in saying even though people have liberty it is not power. Are these two quotes referring to one another? or is this just another quote made by Benjamin Franklin about Liberty What was his meaning to these two quote was Benjamin franklin linking this to the upcoming war named the Revolutionary war.

The easy way is not always the best way is what I think this quote is saying “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. “Benjamin Franklin 1759.” This quote is saying a lot but I think it is manly trying to say liberty is not free. Liberty can’t be explained in a dictionary it is what we have what America has.

Liberty is a very meaningful word. To Americans especially in the time period of Ben Franklin it means a lot. I have always wondered what it would be like to go back a couple hundred years but I don’t think I would want to after reading some of the things our founding fathers went through.

We are very important in this union. What this quote is saying is that us americans are the heart and soul of this union and without us there would be no union. I saw that this quote was in a book. I thought it must be important because it is a book. I also learned that Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. I thought I would add this in because we should be independent sometimes and sometimes we need to work as a group. Then I realized we are never independent because we are working together as a group all the time.

You can not buy liberty and freedom you have to earn it. You cant just wake up one day and be like oh i want more freedom and go and buy some at the local grocery store. You have to earn your freedom. We have to fight for our freedom. People go to war for freedom, you have to fight for it. Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty and freedom.

With no liberty you will always get harmed in some way. That reminds me of the quote that Benjamin Franklin said, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve nether liberty nor safety”. This quote was used on the constitution and to motivate all the solders that went to war! This quote spread through the souls of all the soldiers that fought and died for their freedom. Benjamin Franklin motivated every one on the colonies.

I never understood why the brave africans that were free went into war with people that believed he was much lower than them. But they still fought for our country and lots died trying. But the way that they fought for us should have been a clue to all the people that wanted slaves that it was not right. They would never have given up their liberty for a little bit of safety because they now that it would be no better that dyeing for nothing. So they deserved more.

To get a structure union, you might have to make sacrifices. Sacrifices was one of the things that American’s had to do. They left there home land to start new and by doing that they had to lose things like love one’s, homes, and jobs. It was like starting over. During the revolutionary war the men that went to war against the British one of the strongest armies they new that they could die but they remembered what they were fighting for and that was there homes, families, jobs and freedom. They new the sacrifices that could happen and even then they still fought with heart.
The structure union that we have came from every American building and building to the pieces of the United States. Every person helped make what America is today. We never gave up and it is very hard to stop us from moving forward in life. Even when all odds were against us we fought with the heart and blood of an American and that's what I think that Thomas Jefferson was trying to say when he said “the cement of this union is in the heart blood of every American.”

    Cement And Blood

A nation together is as strong as cement. When a nation is in distress or at a sad time they can join together and become as strong as cement. That was what Thomas Jeffersons message was when he said this quote “The cement of this union is in the heart and blood of every american”. The man who said this quote was Thomas Jefferson when it was said it was colonial times. When he said this quote I am guessing it was a sad time like the boston massacre to send a positive message at a sad time.
When Thomas Jefferson was younger he spent most of his childhood roaming the woods.(millercenter.org) Jefferson believed in a “wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another”. Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence. Also he was the third president of the United States of America. Jeffersons strong beliefs helped shape our nation.

A nation together is as strong as cement. A nation divided is as good as cold blood. Meaning if we are divided we will not succeed and we will die off. The quote is "The cement of this union is in the heart blood of every American." Meaning every American has part of the union within them. Even though all the odds were against us we new that we could win if we believed in ourselves.
The british were the strongest biggest empire. Although the men who fought for us were scared they new that they were doing the right thing. When Thomas Jefferson was young he spent most of his time in the woods. Which was good for his big ride. Thomas Jefferson was the writer of the declaration of Independence.

Together we stood strong to earn our right to freedom. This must’ve been no easy task. You can accomplish many things on your own, but when you have a group of loyal people beside you, you can do great things. When you have a group of people with the same goals, you could be unstoppable. Many times we try to do things ourselves because we don’t think we need help. When you decide though, that help could be beneficial, you will realize that many people can accomplish much more than one person.
Thomas Jefferson’s quote, “The cement of this union is in the heart-blood of every American,” is a very powerful statement. The hard work of our loyal people will pay off. It shows when you want something, but you need to do more than want it, you need to chase after it and make your dreams a reality. People of this time dreamed of freedom. So they worked together to get a result. Now they all have that great feeling of accomplishment because they all pushed forward.

Freedom is never free. You have to work to be able to receive freedom. You can’t just get it right off the bat. The quote is “They that can give up essential liberty purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Ben Franklin, 1759. I believe that this quote can be used in many different ways. They way I use it is that even if you do have some freedom, you will never be safe. You don’t deserve either, You have to earn everything you receive. Ben Franklin said this quote before the Revolutionary War. He said it to the women so they could go off and tell their husbands to get the word around.
This quote was used to help define their new life's. I mean that, since they have freedom, they won’t be safe. But when they have safety, they wont be free. Its either one or the other. This quote was also used to help the solders get ready to fight. It made them realize that to get freedom we have to fight for it. And this is how they got ready. That is how they used the quote from Ben Franklin that he said in 1759 before the revolutionary war.

Liberty is essential & cannot be bought. Ben Franklin thought the same thing, he believed liberty was something impotant to america based on this quote, "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve liberty nor safety". From this quote you can tell that he strongly believes that safety is important. What Ben Franklin is basically saying is if your gonna give up your liberty for this country, just for a little temporary safety you shouldn't deserve neither liberty or safety. He's saying that there is a price for freedom. In 1759 our country became official that's when Ben Franklin said that quote. Ben tried to motivate every one of the colinies. Ben Franklin had very strong beliefs, and was one of the important people that helped make this nation what it is today.

People fought for freedom and lost lives, of family and their own. Benjamin Franklin once said “Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame.” I think that this means you cant think all the way through whats going on when your mad. When your mad you don't process the same way, or think about what your saying or how it will affect other people. In war if your fighting for freedom and you use anger as one of your weapons, it could be used against you. You need to be fighting for something you believe in instead of striding for revenge only then you will most likely succeed. Also is it really worth fighting for if its only out of anger?

Freedom is not something that can be bought nor stolen. I believe this is what Ben Franklin was trying to say when he said “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety” Ben franklin 1759. This phrase must have been very important because it was used in the revolutionary war before America had gained it's freedom. The part when Ben Franklin says, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety” I believe that he was referring to the loyalist and how they were giving up their freedom for just a little safety that could never last.
Ben Franklin was many thinks such as, a scientist, inventor, statesman, printer, philosopher, e.t.c he was one of the most important people in the development if America. But, why was he making all of these trips to other countries? Was it to make allies? To spread the ideas of a government controlled by the people? His full name was Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette which I found interesting.
In the part where Thomas Jefferson says “Heart Blood” I think he means the most pure part of your blood.By the most part of your blood he means the most pure part of you, by that he means that in your purest part you are an American and you are unified to all the other Americans on this world.

    Essential Liberty

Safety is not always there. It can often be an illusion. In the quote “deserve liberty nor safety.” Means that sometimes you think it’s there and some times it isn’t there. I have experienced this before. The word safety is also another word for security. And security is a type of balance. It balances out Americas freedom, liberty, and safety.
Liberty can not be bought. Liberty doesn’t cost anything. We are individual freedom, and that comes with a cost. Ben Franklin is right. If you want to give up essential liberty then you don’t deserve it at all. That is what I think about this quote.

The quote that Ben Franklin had said in the year 1759 was “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” In other words, “A great empire, like a great cake is mostly easily diminished at the edges,” this was said by anonymous. I think that this relates to Ben’s quote because liberty is what keeps us all together but also if you want to pay the price for freedom, then your cake will start to diminish at the edges. Our world is the core of our cake, and will hopefully not fall apart.

Would you trade a quarter for two dimes? In Ben Franklin’s quote, “ They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” His point is that it may seem better now; but in the end it is not worth it. Because two is better than one right? Not always. You need to think out all the possible outcomes of what may happen if you were to give up your essential liberty even if it seems better to be a little safer now.
In the year 1759, Americans were not yet aware but they were building up tension between themselves and the British that would lead to war. During this time, the Americans were feeling that it would be a wise decision to give up their rights and essential liberty that they had worked so hard for, just to feel safe and secure again. Ben Franklin, however, did not agree. He realized that if the American colonies gave into the King they would never be free again. As he stated, “The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage.” Even if it meant war, Ben wanted to keep his essential liberty in tact. Franklin later made his opinion clear to everyone when he stood up at a Pennsylvania assembly and replied to the governor, “They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Now, I hope you realize why you should never trade a quarter for two dimes, or whatever situation this may apply to; always make sure to think through all possible outcomes first!

My lesson learned for ”They can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Benjamin Franklin 1759, Is that if you do not want to fight for freedom or liberty you do not deserve them. The Loyalist did not want to have liberty, they thought that King George the III would always have their back. The Patriots wanted to have liberty and freedom and they were willing to fight for it.
We Americans take for granted what we have today. Many countries in the world do not have freedom. If what happened almost two hundred and fifty years ago didn’t happen, the land that we live on today may not be in possession of the United States.

All Americans must always be willing to stand up for the freedom we have now. People today still have to do things that keep us free. For example, people pay taxes that fund the army. There are few things that are as important as our liberty. Ben Franklin is some one who believed this. In fact Ben Franklin wrote in his news paper The Pennsylvania Gazette that “the colonist should send raddle snakes to Britain.” The colonist agreed and before the revolutionary war started Ben Franklin also wrote pamphlets that promoted union among the colonies. Ben Franklin used the paper to inspire the people to unite for war.
Before Ben Franklin prepped the people for war he tried to help the people by going back to Great Britain to ask the king to treat the colonies fairer and to take away the laws. Great Britain did not listen, the people elected Ben Franklin to be a colonial representative when they would go to war. Ben Franklin convinced the french to help he told them “ if Great Britain won this war that Britain would become more powerful so the French people agreed to help. In my perspective what he is trying to get across is that if you want to give up essential liberty to purchase something thats temporary you are not right and wrong there for you don’t deserve liberty nor safety. If I had to choose on I would choose to keep essential liberty because mainly its not temporary an it is bigger than a little temp. safety. In 1759, Ben Franklin made a quote, saying, “those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” This means that you should never give up your freedom, or your rights, for safety. Ben Franklin is absolutely right. We need safety, but we need liberty even more. Liberty is what defines America as a nation.

Besides, giving up liberty would also be pointless, as you are not going to get safety forever. Imagine life without liberty. You would not be in control of your own life. You would not even be able to make your own decisions. Is that what you would want? Why would you care about safety when you are controlled by somebody? What do you think?

Patrick Henry, was known for various things including being elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1765, being elected to the Continental Congress in 1774, and was a Virginia militia leader in 1775. He was also the first governor of Virginia. This quote is from the speech in the Virginia Convention in 1775, also known as the “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech.
Patrick Henry was referring to the America Revolution in this speech. At this time, they were still ruled by the British and wanted to break free. He was expressing and suggesting that Virginia took part in the Revolution as well, so the colonies could become stronger against the British. He strongly believed that it wasn’t worth living, if you didn’t have liberty.
There are other qualities equal to strength. In this quote, it was intended to encourage Virginia to become part of the America Revolution against the British. Patrick Henry was explaining that they might not have the strength that the British had, like the guns and the highly trained soldiers, but they had skills too, that the British didn’t have. Those skills included, vigilance, and bravery, mentioned in the quote. Although they didn’t have much of the strength, they had enough of the other skills to defeat the British, which they proved by the victory of the Revolution.

Thomas Jefferson could’ve meant a lot of things when he said, “the cement of this union is in the heart blood of every American”. I think he meant that it doesn’t matter how strong the economy is, or how strong our army is. What matters is how strong the willpower of the people is. If there weren’t any strong-willed people in this nation to fight for our freedom, we wouldn’t have a nation to fight for. If we didn’t have people that were good at debating and economics, we wouldn’t have any economy at all.
Initially, when Thomas Jefferson said “cement” I immediately though of cities. Was the quote going to talk about industrialization? Then I decided not to judge so fast, so I read on. I came to “heart blood” and thought, gruesome... What was he talking about now? I looked it over again and read it all as a whole. This time it made more sense; everything clicked. The lesson learned here is that if everyone works together, we are stronger as a group.

“The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave.” said by Patrick Henry, in 1775. I think this quote is saying some important things. Battle isn’t only about being strong. It’s about having the courage and passion to stand up for something you love. If you were just strong, but didn’t have the courage to stand up for what you believe in and fight for it, what good is that strength? Yes, you could use it for brute hard work, but when it all comes down to it, there’s more to a warrior than strength. You need to have that drive in you that propels you to your goals.
War isn’t just pertaining to the battlefield, either. There are politics involved also. This person isn’t doing that, or that person is doing too much of this, and so on. Usually, in my opinion, war is really just petty disagreements between highly thought of people. Now, that’s not always the case, but if you think about it, war all comes down to usually one person or a group of people. So, if you really think about it, strength isn’t everything.

“The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.” Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, 1775
I believe that when Samuel Adams said this, he meant that people shouldn’t get too involved in important people’s personal lives because what is going on in their life doesn’t really matter. What really matters is what they do for your country, or for your club, or whatever you have. It’s like stalking your favorite celebrity. They might not want you to know every second of their life. I know that if random people started stalking me, knowing everything I do, just because they like the things I do, I wouldn’t really like that.
I also think that what he said is true, because if you knew everything about someone, that might not affect you in a positive way. The person you know everything about could have done something wrong, and then you could get pulled into it too. Most people don’t want that. I know I wouldn’t. So don’t stalk your favorite celebrities. Curiosity killed the cat.

So as you can guess, it contained information concerning the war and how they needed their independence to protect their rights. At the time the British were dropping several taxes on them. This quote, meaning, watching the people you give power to is essential. The people watching them, make sure that the power isn’t misused. They make sure that they make fair decisions, like passing laws that are fair to everyone.

“They that would give up essential liberty for little temporally safety, deserve neither liberty or safety.”Ben Franklin,1759. I would not give up my liberty in this world for a little temporally safety, I would rather be free and have liberty then to trow it away and have just a little bit of safety. I want to be like every other single American in the United States. I WANT MY FREEDOM AND LIBERTY.

Sometimes a more diffucult path will achieve grater thing liberty

they that can give up essental liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve nor liberty or saferty
the way this quote was used by ben franklin in 1759. was that he was trying to say that would you give up something that you worked hard for one something special or give it up for 2 little things for almost no work. The part were he said “deserve nor liberty or safety was that if you decided to give up ONE something special that took you a long time to work for then you are being un greatful and do't deserve anything at all.The way he used this quote was that in 1759 things were hard and he wanted to make a statement to the country that working for something for a long time will turn out good in the long run. That the harder way is the better way out like he said in the quote “Little and temporary”temporary does not last for a long time and little is not enough to make safety from everything but that would be the easy way out and no work. A lot and forever for safety and freedom could take a while and take a lot of effort that would be that hard way out but a lot better for yourself.

When Ben franklin said liberty and safety some people would wondered did safety really mean safe was he really telling the truth. If we worked hard enough that would mean that we would protected from everything people, injuries.,wars, and everything else that was dangerous and not safe going on in that
time period.Or did it mean that You couldn't get a lot for it and you worked hard for little instead of not working at all and there was always a catch to this situation .Because liberty did not come easy to the people. If you kept on trying for essential liberty but never got it that would mean keep trying I think that what he ment also saying “purchase little” Means that just because you dont get essential liberty first keep trying don't just settle and take little and fight for what you belive in. The lesson I learned was that freedom is not free.

"They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." This is one of Ben Franklin famous quotes. This quote was said a lot during the revolutionary war. It was said to mostly women so they could tell there husbands. This quote was said when the states were not yet free, and were part of the British empire. They were seeking freedom from the British empire which was a monarchy. Ben Franklin is right about freedom. If you want freedom you're going to have to fight for it because freedom is never free.

“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” Nathan Hale spoke these words before being hanged by the British on September 22,1776. Hale was a captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war. He was also very famous for his service as a spy. He volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission, but he was caught and executed.
I think he said this because he would want more time to fight for his country. He’s also saying that he would loose a dozen of his lives for his country if he could.

Liberty can not be bought.” Sometimes a more difficult path will achieve greater liberty. Which means individual freedom. Individual freedom comes at a cost. To me liberty means freedom. Freedom (to me) mean safety and to know that your leader is trustworthy. So if your dumb enough to give up freedom for safety and only for a short period of time, thats a loose-loose situation. So Benjamin Franklin is right and since he is and american like me i think he knows whats best for us as a country. "THey that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little tempoary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin 1759

"In thinking of America, I sometimes find myself admiring her bright blue sky-her grand old woods-her fertile fields-her beautiful rivers-her mighty lakes and star-crowned mountains. But my rapture is soon checked when I remember that all is cursed with the infernal spirit of slave-holding and wrong; When I remember that with the waters of her noblest rivers, the tears of my brethren are borne to the ocean, disregarded and forgotten; That her most fertile fields drink daily of the warm blood of my outraged sisters, I am filled with unutterable loathing." Frederick Douglas, 1835,This part.. "I remember that all is cursed with the infernal spirit of slave-holding and wrong;" Was about how the slaves were treated and Douglas,Knew this was wrong, and as for the rest of it he is saying how we fought for our freedom, and many people died to get us that right,He appreciates this.
